FAQ about the writing of the U. S. Constitution:

Q: Did Thomas Jefferson write the Constitution? Was he there?

A: No, Jefferson did not write the Constitution and was not present at the convention when it was written. He was in France, acting as the ambassador of the new country.

Q: Okay, what about George Washington, or Benjamin Franklin?

A: Both Washington and Franklin were present during the convention. They both signed the final document.

A: Yes. The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776 (as most of us know), mostly by Thomas Jefferson. It was the document that started the Revolutionary War. It includes the famous words: "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".

The Constituion was written during the summer fo 1787, after the war was over and the states had achieved their independence. It begins with the famous words: "In order to form a more perfect union, ... by the people, for the people, and of the people."

Q: Who all was at the convention where the constitution was written?

A: Each state sent a delegation to work with the other states on solving the problems of the newly independent colonies. For a complete list, check out [this website] about the Constitution.
